DR vs DA vs Authority Score: the authority metrics founders confuse.

Ahrefs, Moz, Semrush, and Majestic all measure "authority," but they are not measuring the exact same thing. Use them as directional instruments, not as interchangeable truth.

Authority metric comparison

Provider Metric Scale Best for
Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR)

Relative strength of a domain's backlink profile compared with other domains in Ahrefs' database.

0-100 Backlink-profile strength and link prospect screening.
Moz Domain Authority (DA)

A Moz score intended to predict how likely a domain is to rank in search results.

1-100 Comparing likelihood of ranking against similar competitors.
Semrush Authority Score (AS)

Semrush's compound quality metric for domains and pages.

1-100 Authority checks that mix backlinks, estimated organic traffic, and spam signals.
Majestic Trust Flow / Citation Flow

Trust Flow represents backlink quality; Citation Flow reflects link quantity or link equity.

0-100 Separating link quality from link quantity.

The practical difference

Ahrefs DR is the cleanest metric when your question is, "How strong is this backlink profile?" That makes it useful for link-building campaigns, directory screening, and measuring whether authority is improving after new links go live.

Moz DA is framed around ranking likelihood. It is still heavily link-influenced, but the intent is broader: comparing how likely a domain is to compete in search results.

Semrush Authority Score blends link power with organic traffic and spam checks. That can be helpful when you want to avoid sites with big backlink profiles but no real search footprint.

Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow split quality and quantity into separate views. A site with high Citation Flow and weak Trust Flow deserves more scrutiny before you buy, pitch, or accept a link.

Which one should you use?

Use the metric attached to your workflow. If you are buying, building, or auditing backlinks in Ahrefs, track DR. If your team reports in Moz, track DA. If your agency lives in Semrush, track Authority Score. The bigger mistake is switching metrics every month and calling that analysis.

For DR Launcher, we use Ahrefs DR because the product is about backlink-led authority growth. We still care about traffic, relevance, and spam risk, but DR is the simplest public number for the promise we are helping customers measure.

DR vs DA FAQ

Is DR the same as Domain Authority?

No. DR is Ahrefs' backlink-profile metric. Domain Authority is Moz's ranking-likelihood metric. They often move in the same direction because both are influenced by links, but they are separate proprietary scores.

Which authority metric should I track?

Pick one primary metric and track it consistently. DR is useful if you work inside Ahrefs or care specifically about backlink-profile strength. DA, Authority Score, and Trust Flow can be useful secondary checks.

Why do different SEO tools show different authority scores?

Each provider has its own crawl index, formula, update cadence, and weighting. The scores are directional, not interchangeable. A site can have DR 40, DA 28, and Semrush Authority Score 22 at the same time.

Does Google use DR, DA, or Authority Score?

No. These are third-party SEO metrics. Google uses its own ranking systems. Authority metrics are still useful as proxies for backlink strength and competitive benchmarking.
